RADIO STATION MUSIC CHARTS FOR SALE!! Getting rid of ENTIRE collection Hi to all of you, This will come as a surprise to four of you, but after nearly 63 years (started August 26, 1963), I have decided to stop collecting RADIO STATION MUSIC CHARTS (SURVEYS). Below will follow a massive list of surveys I'm getting rid of. Keep in mind this is only a small fraction of my entire collection, only about 3% if all "extras/traders" are also counted! I have included ALL surveys that I have earlier than 1960, except some of the newspaper stuff. ALL OF YOU will be quite surprised at what will show up on this list, because only one person has ever looked through my entire collection, and he died about fifteen years ago (Jim Mull in Pennsylvania). Why am I stopping? I've come to notice that surveys that I ACTUALLY "NEED" almost never appear. I've added only one fully-needed survey in the past TWO YEARS. (I added a second one, WSMB New Orleans 1957, but it wasn't "entirely needed" because I already had their Top Five as printed in a newspaper.) I am now ULTRA-lucky if I add TWO needed surveys in the same year. That is bleak, barren, and boring – and a hobby that is almost absolutely unproductive is frustrating. I am holding NOTHING back - AT ALL. I'm even putting "unthinkables" on this list - I mean even the "cold, dead fingers" stuff. I had a good run, and I put together a collection that far exceeds any other collection known to have ever existed. There are plenty on here where the listed copy (or, rarely two or three) is/are, to my knowledge, the ONLY ORIGINAL COPY/COPIES EVER FOUND by anybody. I estimate that my collection has unique-known copies from at least one thousand MORE individual radio stations than what I've listed here. TO MY KNOWLEDGE, EVERYTHING LISTED HERE ARE **ORIGINAL** SHEETS, not later copies of any kind. Some of these prices may appear high, but they're incredibly low, compared to the estimated $50,000 to $80,000 that I put into my collection, and at least 70% of that amount is represented on this list! On at least fifteen occasions, I have paid $1,000 or more for a survey - and it may be on here for $35 or something. All prices here are EXTREME compromises with true reality. MOST of these are, for example, far rarer than Elvis Presley records on Sun, or an original Batman comic from 1947. High offers were necessary to BRUTE-FORCE some of these out of the attics, etc. If I priced according to TRUE RARITY, almost everything here would be between $1,000 and $250,000. LeLet the fun begin! &&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&& ABBREVIATIONS: · (PLUS SIGN) means that, additional to the RANKED songs, more titles ("Hitbound" or "Wax to Watch" or “Pick hits” etc.) are listed ++ DOUBLE PLUS SIGN) there are at least FIFTEEN pick hits or otherwise non-charted titles listed +1 = There is exactly ONE “pick hit” on this survey ** (TWO ASTERISKS) I believe that the ALL copies of surveys ever known to have been found, were originally in my possession. Multiple dates will mostly be true of surveys appearing in NEWSPAPER columns which list Top Fives or Top Tens from multiple radio stations. If any of my multiple dates have ever been sent to any other collector, the TWO STARS will be in (**) PARENTHESES, because at least one issue is “out there” already. (EXAMPLE: WQUB Galesburg IL) In cases where I have multiple dates of this “unique-to-me” chart, the ** is used only the first time. THIS WILL APPEAR BETWEEN THE STATE/PROVINCE AND THE IDENTITY OF THE RADIO STATION, on the left. (**) Though at least one or two have “gotten out,” I am aware of no copies “out there” that I didn’t originally find. The difference between (**) and **, is that the ** indicates that I believe I have the only copy/copies of charts EVER FOUND from this station, and I’ve never sent any to other collectors. AC Adult Contemporary (rarely used, as that format didn’t generally exist before the late 1960s) CLA Classical in all forms (classical, baroque, chamber, romantic, opera, etc.) COU Country music in all its variations (Western, country - yes I consider separate genres) JAZ Jazz POP or MOR Middle of the Road, Pop, or easy-listening music RNB Black music in all of its forms (soul, R&B, rap, etc.) RR Rock music, including all known variations (rock and roll, rock and classic rock, "hard" adult contemporary, etc.) GRADING ABBREVIATIONS: POOR (any illegibility will be noted), FAIR (Much LESS-than-average condition), VG- (less than average condition), VG (Average condition), VG+ (above average condition), EXC (Excellent, some may be "Mint"). Writing will be noted. ALL SURVEYS Full or Legal size CAN BE PRESUMED TO HAVE BEEN FOLDED, though most have since been stored for decades entirely unfolded. I'LL BE USING THIS LISTING SEQUENCE: STATE OR PROVINCE (postal abbreviation) RADIO STATION (call letters, dial location - frequency) SUB-NOTE: if multiple Stations are on the same sheet of paper, my method of listing will be more descriptive, and will almost surely take multiple lines. PRICE in US Dollars [NOTE: ALL ORDERS FROM HERE WILL BE DISCOUNTED AT MY DISCRETION. DISCOUNT WILL BE AT LEAST 20% FOR ANY QUANTITY.] DATE (MM/DD/YY} MUSIC GENRE (RR, COU, etc.) NUMBER OF RANKED SONGS (example: T30 means Top 30) GRADED CONDITION (POOR, FAIR, VG-, VG, VG+, EXC - (SEE ABOVE). SIZE Legal (8 1/2 x14), 8 1/2 x 11 (8/11), Half sheet (one-half of 8 1/2 x 11), Small (LESS than half-sheet size). Size reflects the chart when entirely unfolded. NOTE: “FULL” ALSO includes anything larger than Half-Sheet, up to 8 ½ x 11 size. GRAPHICS ("GREAT" will be enumerated 6 to 10; pictures etc. twill be noted). Lower graphics (4, 5) will also be indicated. "Basic" will usually mean a fully-utilitarian chart which will usually be mimeographed (Mimeo) or Ditto machine (Ditto), with no particular “flair” or cool design or such.. LOCATION (community or city the station is licensed to) #1 SONG and/or ARTIST ADDITIONAL NOTES, etc. (On some occasions, these will go to additional lines.)( &&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&& PART ONE: MULTIPLE LOCAL RADIO STATION SURVEYS PRINTED IN LOCAL NEWSPAPERS. BY DEFINITION, ALL OF THESE ARE *EXTREMELY* RARE. There will be a liberal use of the ** (which means I believe I'm the only collector who EVER found a chart from this Station!), because many of these radio stations ONLY sent their Top Ten for newspaper publication, and never had any printed sheets, as far as anybody knows. Though a local station licensed to Cicero (!!!), with a limited signal, this radio station is nevertheless very important in Soul Music history. TOO MANY DATES to list here in the 1967 (November-December) to 1973 era. Almost always EXC to MINT condition, and usually a Top 45 songs and upcoming songs. Some RARE FUNK AND SOUL listed on these. 1967 or 1968 $2 each. 1969 to 1973: $1.50 each Tell me how many different dates you want. I will space them at least three weeks apart. I have 20 or so dates in all, it looks like. I'll end this experiment here, because listing these is GRUELING, as it involves sequencing all of them. I have around 20,000 sheets of "quantity charts" from about 130 different stations. &&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&& PART THREE: *NETWORKS* and INDIVIDUAL RADIO STATION SURVEYS FOR SALE. This is where "s**t gets real." I have dug into the very deepest layers of my collection. I am holding nothing back, at all, even the ones I thought I'd never consider getting rid of, but I'm breaking away entirely. Only a handful of these are NOT "RARE" and there are many that are (to my knowledge) *UNIQUE* with no other original "anything" from this radio station being known to have ever been found. I cannot price these at values that reflect the extreme rarity of these charts; at least half of these would be priced at THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS EACH if their rarity was to be compared with, say, Elvis Presley records on Sun (which often SELL around $1,000 each - BUT THEY CAN BE FOUND!). If I "gave" ten years of undivided attention, working fifteen hours a day for ten years with no days off, and my goal was to find only ONE more chart from each of these stations FROM THE ERA LISTED, I'd be surprised to find 40% of these. Therefore I feel "strange" putting only $15 to $40 on many of these, with these impossibilities in mind, but this is the reality. Some such as WJJD, the Milwaukee stuff, KFWB, etc. can be found - but some are not known to exist more than thirty feet away from where I am now sitting. Buckle up. This will be a wild ride. Again, ** means that nothing else, in any form, is known to have ever been found, other than whatever copies are (or have ever been) in my possession. RADIO AND TELEVISION NETWORKS: NBC Red *AND* CBS RADIO NETWORKS: "YOUR HIT PARADE" Top 15 songs - AUGUST 14, 1936. 17-inch-long Double Fold, EXC condition. $30 ENTIRE KIT [OTHER DATES IN 1936: 10/05, 10/12, 10/19, 11/02, 11/23. Strangely, 11/23 goes from T15 to Top7. Chart panel only, ballots were sent in $8 each VG+ **CBS RADIO NETWORK: ORIGINAL MIMEOGRAPHED SCRIPT for November 25, 1939 show. This looks like a studio copy used during the show, with some manual written-in corrections, announcing directions, etc. Show was a Top Ten at this time. VG+, amazing condition for this $40 **WABC/880 NEW YORK *and* KNX/1070 LOS ANGELES: "YOUR HIT PARADE" #434 (September 11, 1943) - ORIGINAL PRINTED SCRIPT. (NOTE: WABC wasn't "the WABC that you think you know" - the ABC network didn't exist yet. ABC was born when WJZ/770 was changed over to WABC in the later 1940s. This WABC became WCBS, after buying the WCBS call letters from a radio station in Springfield, Illinois.) VG+ but multiple-staples damage. What I don't know, is whether this was still a network show in 1943, or broadcast only on those two stations. It is “presented as” a WABC/KNX show. $75 CBS RADIO NETWORK: "YOUR HIT PARADE" (CLIPPING, December 16, 1944 - torn out of "VARIETY" Magazine) VG+, formerly folded $6 NBC TELEVISION NETWORK: "YOUR LUCKY STRIKE HIT PARADE" (full page, middle-folded, from VARIETY Magazine) Top 7 list VG $6 -FIVE CLIPPINGS from VARIETY Magazine, various 1955 dates $4 ABC TELEVISION NETWORK: "AMERICAN BANDSTAND" 1957 YEARBOOK (One photo inside shows the Top Ten board; therefore I consider this to be a Chart!) June 22, 1957 - "CBC's Cross-Canada Hit Parade Top Ten" Magazine cover is G+ to VG-, but contents (including the chart) NEAR MINT. $20 "HITSVILLE REPORTER" (MY City/Tri-state area, small-poster flier, folded in middle) April 25, 1960 - Top Tens from: WADO, WNTA-TV, WMGM, WHCT-TV. This chart was an extremely important influence IN MY LIFETIME, as it was the second of three salvos (the first going about 1966 to 1971, and the third – THE HISTORY OR ROCK AND DOLL later broadcast by this very same radio station in 1969, being the third. The 1966-1971 was a weekly “OLDIES” radio show out of Cleveland which I could sometimes listen to from Michigan when the weather was “right” – “THE BIG BEAT” SHOW. This chart was the FIRST ALL-TIME OLDIES COUNTDOWN THAT I EVER HEARD on radio. These three influences pretty much GUARANTEED that I would later make a choice to vbuy and sell old records as a life-career choice, starting in the mid-1970s. This is probably the most-relevant piece of my own personal history, on this entire list. This took close to fifty or sixty hours, because I had to be so precise with what I listed here, and how go give an idea what these things look like without scanning everything. Again, this represents perhaps 2% of all the sheets that I have, though it is a HANDPICKED 2%. My collection has never had an equal, anywhere – in fact only a handful of times have I ever found active collectors who collect these “from all over” and who wasn’t aware of the original collecting “circle” that existed in the 1960s. I was probably the first collector to realize that charts were worth BUYING, and not just relying on trading with other people. When I bought Frank Williams’ collection in 1976 (NOT 1972 as I said somewhere above!), I was not aware of any other person ever having paid anything for any chart. A reminder again, the prices asked here, even the highest prices, are only a minuscule fraction of what the true rarity of these charts are. If every ** chart listed here was removed (those which, AT LEAST AT ONE POINT, I either “discovered” OR LATER HAD all original copies that had ever been known at the time), I could give somebody $1 MILLION and tell them to go out and find the ** items, and I guarantee a lot fewer than one-half of them would ever be found. It would be far easier to assemble 46 sets of the five Elvis Presley single 45’s on Sun with the money, than to find some of these. You should tell me which items you want, and I can put them aside and tell you what $$ to send.
